Personal Branding. Which Are You: Lazy or Stupid?

I have been in business for 30 years now and there is one fact that keeps coming back to me. Being lazy can be a positive trait!

Well, that comment probably needs a bit more structure and explanation.

Over the years I have been fortunate enough to work with some top performers and one thing that they have always had in common is that they seemed to be quite relaxed about things. They took lunches, went to the gym, went on holiday. Appearing to be lazy, they got the job done – and more besides.

They were not of course lazy in the traditional sense but you could argue that they often could have done more.

By contrast I have worked with some people who were always panicked. The never had any “me” time, they cancelled holidays, they were invariably late for meetings and with deadlines, and they were going nowhere fast…very fast.

So how is this?

Well, I suspect that this is the difference between working hard and working smart. Cramming your days full of tasks and never really getting on top of them is a very wasteful way to spend time. Your boss might think you look like a hard worker, but when it comes to promotion time you are unlikely to be the one who gets a nice new car and a pay rise. Because the only thing that matters is results.

This is why having a process and a structure to your social media is so crucial if you want to be successful.

Save five minutes, save a day, a week or more

I use the analogy that having a process is like the people who know how to use decimal tabs in Microsoft Word. Without them you spend five minutes on every document adding spaces to line-up the figures on the right-hand side. If you know how to set and use decimal tabs the same task takes literally seconds.

To learn to use decimal tabs takes you five minutes. Then it saves you five minutes for every document you ever need to write from then on. However, when you offer to show someone how to use decimal tabs they invariably say, “please show me later…I haven’t got time now!”.

Social media processes are just the same. My co-founder Tim Hughes developed a process for tweeting original content regularly. He taught me, and I have been using it ever since. Now I tweet 25 times every day and write original content. I also post and share great content written by the rest of the team.

I have gone from nowhere to being one of the top 10 global influencers on social selling (amongst other things). And it all take me less time than writing and sending a few tweets used to do!

Lazy or stupid? It is just being smart with your time. Is Richard Branson successful? Does he work 10 hours per day at his desk? I think you know the answer to this one!
